For the A to Z Challenge, I’ll be writing flash fiction pieces based in the world featured in my upcoming novel, Where the Carnies Are. You’ll meet some of the characters and learn their back stories. These stories are completely original and are not part of the book.
Lola and Leo
“Please just go on a double date with me. It won’t be as awkward as a blind date and Mike will only go out if Leo has a date,” Amelia begged Lola.
“I’m not really interested in dating right now. He’s not even from this kingdom, what if he’s boring?” Lola asked.
Amelia sighed and crossed her arms, “He’s a pierced man. How boring could he be? You will be perfect for each other.”
“Because I’m a tattooed lady?”
“Exactly,” Amelia replied.
“Fine, but if you notice one of my tattoos waving a big red flag, we are cutting it short,” Lola said.
Later that night the two met up with Mike and Leo. Lola wasn’t sure what to think of Leo at first. He was . . . shiny. Metal rings were popping out all over the place. Underneath all of the silver, Lola could see a good looking guy. He seemed to be about as normal as any carny would be, and Amelia was right–he didn’t seem boring.
The two couples decided to take the train to the Enchanted Carousel. Lola’s life-long horse was happy to see her. Leo walked around the carousel, trying to find a horse that would let him ride. He’d never been on the carousel before, and therefore did not have a horse.
As he stepped closer to Lola’s horse, the one beside it neighed and stomped its feet at Leo. The horse had chosen him.
“Looks like you are riding next to me,” Lola said.
Leo smiled and hopped on as the ride began to spin.
“I just wanted to let you know, that I think you and your tattoos are so beautiful,” Leo said. “I love how the move and change, but always seem to remain in the same black and white intricate style.”
“Thank you,” Lola said. “Maybe one of these days I’ll give you one.”
“I’d like that,” Leo said with a smile. Then he reached over and held her hand as they went up and down on the carousel horses.
